Weekend at the Farm

My daddy posted some pictures from my weekend at my grandparents' farm on his blog. I will have to do the same soon.

It has yet to be created and I need your help! What is your favourite music to travel to?
Some potential ideas:

More Than Anyone Would Want to See...

I have the unfortunately incident of seeing an old man's butt on the bus. My seat was facing the door and his pants exposed at 3/4 of his old man hairy butt. Gross.

The Student Commutor Workout

Equipment Needed: Shoulder bag containing at least one large hardcover textbook, various food filled plastic container, a travel mug, one clipboard, one package of loose leaf, cell phone and various miscellaneous office supplies

The Workout:
Phase One: Trip to the University
Leave your house in the morning at the last possible minute so it is guaranteed that you will nearly miss your bus. Run like your life depended on it to catch the bus or you will be late for school. Motivation is the key to this workout.

Phase Two: Trip from Class to Class
To get the full benefit, make sure that your professor never end class on time and your next class is on the opposite side of campus, up several flights of stairs.

Phase Three: Trip to Work
Before catching your bus to go to work, purchase lunch from the most popular food establishment to guarantee the longest line thus the longest wait time. Try to eat your food as quickly as possible and underestimate how much time you will need repack your equipment (see above). Run like your life depended on it to catch the bus or you will be late for work.

Once you arrive downtown, get off at least 4 blocks away from work because transferring to the bus that would take you right to work would make you late. To ensure greater motivation, walk to work in the middle of a winter storm. Strong winds not only encourage you to increase your pace but also provide excellent resistance training.

Phase Three: Trip Home
Make sure your boss give you too much work so you have to leave late so you have approximately 8 minutes to cover 3 blocks. This will ensure that you will in fact miss your bus forcing you to run to the next stop two blocks away like your life depended upon it. In fact your life does depend upon it because it is after 9pm, you are downtown and the next bus doesn't come for another hour. As with phase three, winter weather is still a great motivating factor.

The results: Even the fittest person will feel the burn in their abs, legs and shoulders.

Just Call Me Student Lady

Hello Blogosphere! I hope you missed me. I really need to be in bed but we have so much to catch up on.

This week was Teacher Lady's triumphant return to university and what a week it was. I'll try to break it down into categories.

The Bus
I decided not to get a university parking pass and opted instead for a student bus pass. It will also save me gas money. I had a transit pass in Calgary that cost me $75/month and I was amazed that a student pass here is only $48/month (there is no such thing as a student pass in Calgary and an adult pass is for anyone over 14). After studying the routes, I figured out that driving 5 minutes and parking my car at a nearby mall would save me about a half hour of travel time. I was pretty used to this concept since I always used to drive my car to a nearby train station in Calgary.

The first day I took the bus was on Tuesday. After classes, I take the bus downtown to work. As of this week I've shifted to part-time hours and Tuesday was my first 1-9 shift. The plan was to catch the 9:15 bus at Victoria Park which is a couple blocks north of work. As I arrived at the bus stop (early) the bus started to pull away. Since I was coming from behind the bus driver didn't see me. The next stop is at Cornwall and because of the one way streets the bus has to go to Broad and loop around to 11th. Cutting through Scarth Street Mall, "I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid." I beat the bus there. Actually, I beat the bus there but didn't know it and had to check about 7 other buses to see if they were the right number. I had to double back when my bus arrived. (See illustration below. My path is black, the bus' path is blue). I had two text books in my bag and I was wearing winter boots and the impact on the pavement and the lack of proper footwear bruised the bottoms of my heels.

Excuse the crude path drawing, I'm still learning GIMP

In other news, the route on the way home from the university makes me motion sick. I don't know why but I suspect it is because it winds so much. Today I took Gravol to combat but since I couldn't swallow, it got stuck at the back of my mouth. So gross. Once swallowed, I had a peppermint to get rid of the taste. Bad idea, you should not mix peppermint and Gravol. Peppermint relaxes the esophagus opening* and I think it messed with Gravol working properly. It also made my throat numb. I should have known better.

Classes
This semester is going to kick my butt, as my former roommate used to say. I have five classes (one of which is an honours math class) and two labs, all of which are faculty of science classes. Every week I will have 4 assignments, 2 labs and 1 quiz. Four out of my classes seem like the work will be easy but just a lot of it. My honours class probably will make me cry and make me cry often. I'm struggling with the review material (does not help that I took the prerequisite class over ten years ago). I was slightly comforted by the fact that I have more of a clue of what is going on than the rest of the class (comforting but does not help the grade). A fellow student found notes from a different prof as well as his old assignments and tests. I hope this will be a help since I've only had two classes and I fell like I'm a semester behind.

They restructured the math requirements for Education, Science and Engineering so now everyone takes the same classes (For example: they used to have specific Engineering Calculus classes). I'm not used to such big classes, especially 3rd year math classes. Three out of my five classes are held in lecture theatres. My honours math class only has five people in it and the class room is comically large.

As of today, I am officially an honours student. I had enrolled as one but through a clerical error I was not registered as one. The Department of Math recognized me as one but the university did not. There is a summer research job I'd like to apply for but it needs to say on my transcript that I am an honours student.

Making Myself Known
I'm trying to be bold and make myself know to my professors, lab instructors and people in the math department. I figure it can only help me in the long run so I had to bite the bullet and overcome my shyness. The acting department head is the only professor I have this semester that I've had before. I asked him a question after class and we got talking about his markers (as in people who mark). When I mentioned I previously had been a high school math teacher who has taught Calculus, he encouraged me to apply to be a marker in the fall (too late now). I also randomly ran into the former dept head who I've had many dealings with when I was previously at the university and after as a teacher at conferences. He is retired from teaching but still works at the university running a math education website. He gave me his card because he wants me to come visit him. He wants to talk about my academic future and get my feedback on the website. He was one my favourite profs, second only to Jimmy P (but who can ever complete with a soulful tenor?**) He is so awesome, he has a great bushy beard and wears cable-knit sweaters.

I Am So Old (But I Don't Look It)
Nobody has called me a Narc yet, so that is a plus. Even though I am probably the oldest person (besides the prof) in the class, I don't look it. Some of my classmates look 12 but some look older (poor premature balding boys). It helps that I am mostly taking 3rd year classes.

The university had to reissue my student card since my purse was stolen after the last time I took a class. The girl gave me the option of using my old picture since I "look the same" (her words). I could not believe they would let me use an ID picture from 1996 of an 18 year old Janny. Almost 30 year old Janny approves and will take that as a compliment.

The math dept head looks exactly the same as he did ten years ago. I think he is in his late 40s (judging from how long he has had his PhD). I'm pretty sure he has the same clothes too (or he buys his clothes in bulk). His Dr Martens circa 1994 would be the dead give away.

More stories for another time.....

The Camper Returns

This past weekend, my family met for our annual camping trip. All of my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins from my mom's side of the family were there, 25 in all. The only person missing was my brother. We did however have a non-related Shannon there.
Thoughts on the weekend:
My aunts and uncles might start hating me for teaching my cousins Cowboy, Ninja, Bear. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Swimming amongst dead fresh water shrimp is not my idea of a good time.

Laying on the beach all day can be exhausting.

The town of Balzac never stops being funny.

Birthday Road Trip #1

I can't believe I have not had time to write about this until now, this happened nearly 3 weeks ago. Anyway, late news is better than no news.

I worked 13 hours on Saturday and was ready for a much needed break. Sunday was my friend's birthday and the plan was to go out to his dad's cabin for the day.

We all met at my friends house so we could car pool out to the cabin since it was about an hour away. When we were deciding who was going with who, I was told that I was going in the vehicle that had to pick up someone on our way out of town. A couple problems with that situation:
1) The driver was not told that he had to pick anyone up and I mentioned after we left.
2) No one knew how where this guy lived that we had to pick up.
3) When we phone the birthday boy for directions, they were wrong
4) When we called the guy we were picking up for directions once we realized we were lost, he gave us the wrong house number.
All of this resulted in us leaving the city over an hour later than we were supposed.

After for traveling for about an hour, we realized that we had missed a turn off. The only person who knew the way was reading and not paying attention.

We had a lot of fun traveling. Lots of "car dancing", Oiler flag waving and funny conversations. The driver even invented a new dance which I believe he calls "Feeding the Baby".

Road Trip complete with 13 year olds

This past weekend I drove 3 13 year olds to a church camp in Saskatchewan and back again. The trip there was pretty good with the exception of the girl who would loudly proclaim "I'm bored" the second a conversation ended. the trip home was a different story...
I thought we were doing pretty good for time. We left the camp about 2 hours earlier than I had told the parents we would. There was a huge line of traffic right before the bridge to get to the highway. As we waited about 9 cops cars past us. We figured it was a really bad accident up ahead.
After about a half hour, a police officer directed us to drive on the shoulder to pass. As we approached the bridge we saw that protesters had blocked the road. Later I heard that other people had to wait more than an hour to get past.
My biggest mistake of the trip was letting the boys have two ice cappuccinos. Apparently 13 year olds who are barely 5 feet should not have that much caffeine. Being a teacher, I should have known better.

Trumpet Blast from the Past

Yesterday, on my way home from work, I was behind 3 buses from Saskatchewan. I thought that was pretty cool. Then I realized that there were high school band and choir students on the buses from my old high school! Bizarre. Every year the band and choir take a trip and leave the Wednesday before the Victoria Day Weekend and return on Saturday night.
Note: For those who do not know me, I live 8 hours away from my hometown. This is why it is so surprising to see buses from my high school.

Small Town Wedding

I went to my cousin's wedding in small town this weekend. For me, this wedding will be known as the time my plate slipped, flipped over and dumped the entire contents into the serving tray of mashed potatoes.

After the wedding, a bunch of people went over to a relatives house and played games (including several rounds of Mafia). We had a pretty good time.

Last night I had the craziest dream. Since we had playing games for the whole evening, I dreamed some one taught us this game where every starts with play money and we need it to complete certain tasks for the game. One of the tasks was time travel. There were two ways we could time travel: sit around the kitchen table or wear fanny packs. I told people about it at breakfast this morning. The guys had not arrived yet and the moment they walked in my cousin yelled, "Janice had a dream about fanny packs last night." She didn't even give them a chance to say hello.

What once was lost...

I went to Banff with some friends on Sunday. One of the friends I had not seen for over a year. It was pretty windy so we just stayed in the town of Banff.

I was a "view and run" and didn't even know it. When we first got to town one friend desperately had to go to the bathroom. He happened to park right by a museum. We looked around the gift shop then used the washrooms (we didn't want to seem like we were only there to pee). I decided I wanted to check out the art exhibit; strangely my friends did not come with me. After we left the building my friends told me I was supposed to pay to go in. It was a gallery owned by the government it never occurred to me I would have to pay to go in. I'm used to the ones in Saskatchewan that you make a donation if you like but no admission is charged. Oops. Apparently it was $6 for adults, it was hardly worth $6.

Yesterday, my cell phone was found. I was so sure that I left it in the loaner van I had while my car was being fixed. I called the place and it was loaned out again so I had to wait for the person who had it to contact the auto body shop. They called me back saying it wasn't in the van. I could not figure out where i could have left it. I remember where I left it and then I did not have it after. It left me very confused. Yesterday, they called me back and told me they found it. It was exactly where I left it. My cousin is picking it up tomorrow. I have no idea how it will get to me. I am mostly relieve no one was using it. (I did have service suspended on Thursday but that was after being missing for 4 days).

Today was back to the grind stone after a long weekend. The problem with full time employment, it seriously cuts into my procrastination time.

I'm back...finally

I finally have Internet for my computer. Last night the tech guy came and made some changes so it would be allowed.

Moving was a bit of a gong show. It felt like I was never going to get out of Saskatoon. Some highlights of the move:

  • one of the movers looked like Willem Dafoe

  • My car was not ready until 4pm. I had been ready to go at noon so I had to wait. I went over to a friend's house and visited her for awhile.

  • After my car was ready, I had to put on the new windshield wipers I had purchased. I couldn't figure how to put them on when I realized that I bought the wrong ones. I could not return since they were out of the package (I also lost the receipt). I bought new ones. I broke one of them trying to put them on in the Canadian Tire parking lot. I had to buy another one. To summarize: I had to buy 5 windshield wiper blades recently.

  • I realized around Kindersley that I did not know were my cell phone was. I had so much stuff packed in my car, I was hoping it was somewhere. I had a sneaky feeling that it might be in the loaner vehicle from the auto body shop. I contacted everywhere I was on Monday and I could not track it down. I tried calling the phone, I could check messages but could not find it. I finally had to suspend service on Thursday.

Until I find my own place, I am boarding with the family of my new employer. It just so happens my new employer is my cousin's husband. Currently I have the house to myself since they left on vacation yesterday. My cousin Saryn is another boarder here and she will return on Monday. Enough for now.

See ya in awhile

I woke up this morning feeling pretty lousy. My allergies have been pretty bad these last couple weeks. I think I have caught a cold. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between an allergic reaction and a cold.

This will be my last post for a little while. Tomorrow the movers come at 9am. My car is getting fixed and should be done tomorrow. They will call me tomorrow morning to let me know for sure. Once I have my car back, I will pack it up and go to Calgary.

Overkill

I am in Regina right now to run some errands before moving to Alberta. I had to take the bus because my car is in the shop for the next 5 days.

I dropped my car off at the auto body place this morning. I had called ahead of time so they could give me a ride to the bus station. The boss was going to drive me but then something came up and he asked one of the guys who work in the shop to drive me. He still drove the boss' vehicle which is a brand new Lexus SUV. It was a little strange being dropped off at the bus station in a Lexus.

I'm supposed to be spending time with my bro right now. Unfortunately he has spent the last hour helping my mom put up cabinets in the basement.

Early tomorrow morning I start my allergy testing. Boo.

Here We Come a Wassailing

Yesterday was a very long day. I was at my parents and I was supposed to get up at 8am so I could be on the road by 9:30. That did not happen at all. The alarm went off but I think I finally got out of bed around 9:50. I finally got on the road by 11am.

I finally got out the city and I realize I left my allergy serum in my mom's fridge. I was supposed to get my shot in Regina but a nurse at my doctor's office here in Saskatoon gave me a package with only one of the bottles. I would not be able to wait for my shot anymore so I had to turn back. I finally got back on the road on 11:40.

I was supposed to tutor at 2pm but since I left Regina the last time so late, I called and asked if we could change the time. I am so glad I did, I even had time for a 20 minute nap before tutoring! (Napping is extremely exciting to me).

I had promised my tutees that I was available for 3 hours. I am so glad that once we got to work they had enough after 2 hours. I had time to get my allergy shot before caroling with my youth group in the evening. Unfortunately because of how long I had to wait at the walk-in clinic I did not have time for supper.

I got to my church at little early so I could organize the food we were going to be distributing to the seniors. My follow leader helped me sort out what food was going where. He discovered a container with no label. I looked inside and it was left over food from the church Christmas dinner a couple weeks back. We did not have permission to distribute that so I put it back (more on that later). Slowly people started to arrive. We eventually we had 10. A decent number for caroling considering I thought we were only going to have 4.

The caroling went very well. I think we were a real blessing. I was only able to go to half of our stops since I had to work last night. I dropped off the passengers at a home near my work and was about to drive of when some of the fellow carolers stopped me. They needed to tell me that I had labeled a tub of margarine as macaroni and cheese. Since most of our food was put into old margarine and ice cream containers, the container of margarine got mixed up with the food. I had put it in the freezer with the rest of the food. How silly of me. I am just glad they caught my mistake before they gave it away.

I stopped at Subway on my way to work. It was 9pm and I had still not eaten yet. Unfortunately there was a trainee working on her first shift by herself. Oy. I was the 3rd person in line and I took me a half hour to get my food.

Work took forever last night. I was so tired and just wanted to go home. Due to Christmas shoppers, the store was a mess. I get paid for 3 hours and it took me 3.5 hours. I guess that makes up for all the times I finish early. I did not leave until 1:15am.

I feel bad for the security guard (aka Stoic Guy) who stayed a half hour later than he had to. Security guards cannot leave until all the booksellers cash out. So Stoic Guy was waiting for the last person to leave. He was content to search on the Internet thinking he was earning overtime. Little did he know that the bookseller left and did not tell him. Poor guy.

I got home and my roommate (the tiny blond one) was still not home. She was picking some people at the airport at 11:40 and their plane still had not arrived. She did not get home until after 2. I was still up when she got home. I was trying out my newly arrived webcam with microphone purchased for a penny on ebay (no one else bid).

Last night at work was a breeze. I finished before the cleaning crew and the cook. Booyah (sp?)

I am going to Regina this weekend for a choir concert. My mom's choir and my choir are doing two joint concerts. One this weekend in Regina and the other the following weekend in Saskatoon. I will possibly be traveling with Amanda and Ky. Hopefully me and the Hingston girls will be able to hit the last day of Agribition. Nonetheless good times will be had.

They said it would never happen...

I remembered another story about my trip last week. On the last morning, I was awoken at 7pm so I could pack. That did not happen at all. I managed to get out of bed 10 minutes before breakfast.

I decided that I was just going to throw everything into my sleeping bag and cinch it up. People thought I was joking. I was so lethargic Sunday morning I just didn't care. I hate packing to go home. I don't mind packing to go on a trip because you have the excitement of the trip to motivate you. Packing on the way home when I do not want to leave and are not looking forward to the long trip home.

I threw as much as I could into the suitcase and rest into the sleeping bag. I figured that walking up and down the stairs was more effort than I was willing to out forth. I just threw most of my luggage from the top of the stairs to the main floor. All my mom did was raise her eyebrows and said nothing.

I still miss my sister. :(
