Saturday Night's All Right for Fightin'
Fighting has a bit of a theme of my life.
I've mostly been dealing with the fall-out from Saturday's games night the last couple days. There are definitely strained relations right now. It did not help that I did not respond in the most mature fashion.
I've also been struggling with the computers at work. Network cards on two separate computer within 24 hours decided to stop working. We have acquired to two new computers in the last couple weeks. I have been having a difficult time importing the emails onto the new computer.
My allure to computer geeks and computer geeks alone continues. Yesterday, I had to go to a computer store in Calgary that carries specialize and hard to find items. It was highly exciting for the sales associate that a girl was
1) in the store
2) talking to him
3) knew what an USB to IDE converter was
4) purchasing an USB to IDE converter
The last two are signs of above average computer knowledge. He literally was dancing at the till.
I know it is unfair to say I only attract computer geeks, I also attract overweight security guards with the handlebar mustaches.

When Games Go Bad
I got my feelings hurt a little bit this evening.
Some friends who just moved out of town invited some people over for supper and games. We visited for most of the evening but later decided to play Cranium. My teammate had never played before and was having a hard time getting any right answers. She was so nervous she was shaking. I really did not care if I won or not. I just wanted my teammate not to get so down on herself. The situation was not helped by a pair of boys (they certainly were lacking the mature for me to call them men) who got upset with us several times and was even at times very rude. We were not winning, we were not even ahead of them so I have no idea why we were the target of their spurn.
My encouragements seemed to help because she eventually relaxed a bit and started to do better. We came from behind and eventually won which made how we were treated even worse. Some people can be such jerks. Poor winners and poor losers. The purpose of the evening was to visit and have fun. Instead, for me, it ended on a bad note so that will be my memory of the evening. I tried not to start crying on the trip home. I admit I'd rather win than lose. Much rather than winning I would rather play with good sports. Considering how your words and actions will/ might effect others around you is a sign of real maturity.

My Troubles Come in Legions
What an evening I had and it all began with trying to print.
For the evening, my boss wanted to sort through some old books and binders to put into storage tomorrow. All I had to do was print off some research I had done this afternoon before I could help. The printer was not working so I had to fix it before I could print. I had to put a CD into the server to reinstall the printer but the CD drive would not shut all the way. It would not open again. CD drives have a a small hole so you can manually open them. I used a paper clip but it was still stuck. I tried again and pushed a little harder, bent the paper clip and it got stuck. I had to open up the server to remove the CD and the paper clip. So it took me approximately 3 hours to print off 5 pages. The CD drive is toast now.
The Summary Song:
I had to fix the printer to print the pages.
I had to reinstall the printer to fix the printer to print the pages.
I had to remove the CD from the drive to reinstall the printer to fix the printer to print the pages.
I had remove the paper clip to remove the CD from the drive to reinstall the printer to fix the printer to print the pages.
I had to take the server apart to remove the paper clip to remove the CD from the drive to reinstall the printer to fix the printer to print the pages.
There's a hole, there's hole, there's a hole at the bottom of the sea.

Lowered Expectations
Note: This is a blog I wrote a week ago and it was saved on my computer. We finally got the new wireless router on Tuesday evening so I can post it now. Updates are italicized.
Here I sit, with a hot water bottle to my hip. Fun times. When will this end.
My hip is doing much better but is still badly bruised.
I usually does not hurt during the day but I still can’t sleep on that side.
I just finished watching the most recent episode of Veronica Mars. I was expecting big things – there hasn’t been an episode in 6 weeks and the there was buzz this was supposed to be a real turning point in the season. I don’t know if it was the anticipation caused me to have unrealistic expectations but I was expecting more.
This week’s episode more than compensated for last weeks. There was a mini-cliffhanger at the end so I cannot wait until the next one. I found out today that there will be all new shows until the end of the season.
My battle with electronics continued today.
I had to hook up the printer physically to the server (it had previously had been hooked up wirelessly). I have been having all sort of problems ever since. The computers keep on losing the printer settings. It is very unusual.
I have been so busy I have not had the time to make the printer wireless again.
The desktop computer that I normally work on spontaneously shut off twice today. It has happened at least once a day this past week. Every time it happens, Windows gives a different reason for the “serious error”. I got so frustrated today I gave up and hooked up my own laptop to the network and continued working.
I haven’t had the problem of it spontaneously restarting but there are lots of problems with MS Office. The problems can be fixed by program updates but the Office CD I need is missing. So it is a great source of frustration. After threatening the computer that I would kick it in the groin if it had one, my cousin told me that I should write a book of all my sayings.
I have to apologize for the lack of silliness lately. Employed Janny is apparently a very dull girl.
Unfortunately I'm still pretty dull. However I did almost making myself sick eating ice cream sandwiches. I’m pretty sure dull people don’t gore themselves on ice cream sandwiches. Maybe I’m not.

"You can't always get what you want"
One step further:
Janice wants to know about her Abramovitz roots in Canada.
All of a sudden Janice wants to say something that will make Cora happy
Tony says that she has the drive though, and Janice wants to see an Asian woman win this competition.
JANICE wants a live-in or live-out Nanny job
In her teaching, Janice wants to expand these images to include those from works of other Saskatchewan and Canadian writers.
Janice wants a beagle for our next dog, but she is still insisting about waiting a couple of years.
Curious and outgoing, Janice wants a home with tons of fun!
Boroff is at her heels, but Janice wants nothing to do with him - until Canfield convinces her that he is the key to publicity for her new movie.
Janice wants to get married and finds the best way to get them is to go to funerals.
Her shot looks great, but Janice wants more neck.
Janice Wants a Gangster!
Janice wants to take home economics.
Janice wants to have fabric left over when she is done with a quilt.
Janice wants to get back to the Atlanta and find out who set her up for the massacre on Tros.
Janice wants to buy 7 cups of lemonade from the lemonade stand for her friends.
Janice wants to expand [the] Farmer’s Market, perhaps do something with soils.
Janice wants to have a Pasta Dinner for the parishioners.

"But if you try sometimes you might find/ You get what you need"
I was inspired by Shannon and Bron.
I agree that Janice needs a man in her life, but would prefer it if he was a decent but down-to-earth bloke who would help her get her life back on track.
I think Janice needs Jesus because her therapy sessions are not working,
Janice needs to create a new product page.
Janice needs to go to toilet. Like, urgently!
Janice needs your help getting her modeling agency up and running
Janice needs a reality check!!!
Janice needs some professional mental help.
Janice needs resources on how to help her teachers and students manage anger so they can focus on their studies and improve their scores.
Janice needs to move on mentally and figure out a reasonable course of action. ... Janice needs to take a look at the big picture, consider all of her options
Janice needs to let Christopher know what is acceptable and what is not.
Janice needs articles written and ready for press from anyone who has information for the members.
Janice needs an extra day’s holiday.
Janice needs to have her mouth botoxed shut.
Janice needs to be resuscitated or stitched back together at some point .
Janice needs to sit her old butt down.
Don't get me wrong, Janice needs to be prodded every now and then, Lord knows it all goes to her head.
Janice needs to get cats out of trouble.
Janice needs loo roll so Helen passes it to Janice but it rolls too fast and ends up in Andrea's cubicle.
I think Jess thinks Janice needs help just like the whales need help.
If Janice needs to add 10 gm of cinnamon to each pie, how many gms of cinnamon does she need to buy?

WWMD?
I went shopping with my cousins today and I bought the cutest shoes ever! They are chocolate brown satin ballerina slippers with a ribbon that ties around your ankle and a wedge heel. They look super-fantastic with jeans, dress pants or a smart skirt. The purpose of our trip was to find shoes and jewelery for my one cousin who is getting married next month. Her wedding shoes are the same as mine except in off white. My other cousin tried a pair on in Disney-princess-blue but did not buy them (poor university student). We had a pretty fun time.
10 points for anyone who guess what my title means.
50 points for anyone who guesses what happened to my cousin today. Hint: it is something she has never done before but she wanted to do it in preparation for her wedding.

Ouches
Yesterday, while leaving the doctor's office. I feel on ice. There is a narrow sidewalk covered by snow and ice so I was walking on the road. A car was coming towards me so I steps onto the sidewalk. I took a couple steps, slipped and tried to brace myself on the short wall beside me. I scraped and bruised the side of my hand on said wall, slipped further and hit my hip on the wall. After I hit my hip I banged my knee on the sidewalk. I was pretty shaken up. This old man came up to me and was asking where he was allowed to park. It was a confusing exchange even for someone who was not wiping the mud off their bloodied hand. He saw me fall and then walked over to me. I thought he was going to ask me if I was alright.
Now there is a dark purple bruise on my hip. I do not bruise easily so for there to be any sort of mark tells you how much it hurts. I was throbbing in pain this afternoon and had to take some pain killers. They did not help much.

I hate technology but not as much as you, you see
I am currently writing from my work computer. There has been many technical difficulties the last couple days. To summarize:
- the wireless router lost all reason to live yesterday. It is currently in a coma.
- My work computer has spontaneously restarted twice in a 24 hours period.
- My cousin's old computer has had repeated "boot disk errors". I am hoping her computer will last long enough for me to transfer her files to her new computer.
- MS Access decided today that two users are entering data into my beautifully designed database. So we cannot add any new entries or add the old ones to a new database.
- MS Office keeps on crashing and I have no idea where the CD is so I can install the program updates.

First month

So I have been in Calgary for nearly a month and I still have not even started to look for a place. So what did Janice do instead? Took part one of a speed reading course and helped my cousin do research on a new computer.
The speed reading class is taught by my cousin that I am boarding with. My eyes are so tired from the course. I took the class with my brother's friend. There were many sarcastic and witty comments. There was this French dude that was hilarious (without meaning to be). We were learning this memorizing skill and he was completely missing the point of the example. He was shouting out ridiculous comments in complete seriousness.

Work By the Numbers
Work has been terribly busy these last couple days. We were preparing for a big meeting today for a health reform society my employer co-founded. Most of my time has been spent designing a logo and a brochure for an upcoming conference as well as collecting and photocopying government health related documents. This morning was spent putting the binders together. The plan was put the binders together, get dressed up for the meeting and leave by 11am.
However....
I felt terrible this morning. I thought it was just from lack of sleep. Around 9am, I started to feel really dizzy so I knew it was more than sleepiness. I thought I was going to throw up (never did). I was not well enough to go to the meeting. I called my employer, sent the binders with the other employee that was going to the meeting and then crawled into bed. I slept for 3 hours. Throughout the day I had more dizzy spells but not nearly as bad as this morning.
Total Amount of Sleep the Last Two Nights: 9 hours
Hours Worked Yesterday : 11
Hours worked Today : 4 (5.5 if you count the hours after midnight). I ended work at 11am.
Number of Pages Photocopied Yesterday: 700+ (Manually double sided so that is 1400+ sides photocopies)
Hours I Slept During the Day Today: 5
Number of Dogs Almost Made into Rugs: 2

Miracle on Grass
I never even heard of the World Baseball Classic before today. I was reading the New York Times Direct this morning and one of the top stories was Canada Beats the U.S. at Its Own Game. It is the shocker in the sports world right now.
I Feel Old
I went skating at the Olympic Oval with my cousin on Tuesday. That was a neat experience. I have never skated on such nice ice. She was so worried that I would be skating circles around her. She's over 20 years older than me and I look like someone who is in shape (but sadly am not). She had no reason to worry at all. I had a hard time keeping up to her! After about a half hour after skating at a pretty brisk pace, I had to take a break. I skated for another 10 minutes or so then I had to take a break again. I still wanted to skate but I couldn't keep up with her pace so I had to take it easy. I was only going faster than two people on the ice -- a little boy and a petite Asian woman. I had the impression that both were beginners. How embarrassing. I have been skating almost as long as I could walk but you would have never guessed it. I'm still getting my allergy build up so let's blame it on that. Yeah, let's blame it on fatigue from the allergies.
Sorry that I haven't posted in a couple days, I think Ky broke my blog. Stop it Ky! Your reign of terror has to stop. How can I dole out people's prescribed dose of procrastination without my blog?

I remember a time when John Travolta was cool then he wasn't then he was again. Clearly his coolness has dissipated again.
Not even Boom-Boom Washington could save him now.

Reese Witherspoon shows us why she deserves her supporting actress award.
Sad Reese
Violent Reese
I do admit that I adore Reese Witherspoon and I think she is as cute as a button. I thought this was a pretty neat picture of when it was announced she had won.
Umm, tiny guitar as a formal accessory?
Hilary Swank felt safe knowing that Wyatt Earp is keeping an eye on her.

Adventures with Rare Well Done Beef Soup
I didn't manage to get to bed until around 3am and then had church in the morning. I punched my snooze button 3 times. For those of you who know her, my cousin Stephanie had to WAIT FOR ME to go to church. She is the queen of lateness.
For lunch on Sunday, I had my first quasi-successful attempt using chopsticks. The reason I even tried using chopsticks because I was scared people would judge me for not using them. I finished my meal albeit slower than my dinner companions. My shirt was covered with tiny little spots of soup. I had much better teachers than in the past.
As a result of my lack of sleep on Saturday night. I had a huge nap Sunday afternoon. I slept way too long and I could not get to sleep last night until late. On the upside, I'm a 1/3 of the way through the book I started yesterday.

Strange Connections to Warren Beatty
This past week I came across a quote:
"If I can't dance, I don't want your revolution!" - Emma Goldman (there are many variations of this quote floating around)
I thought this was an interesting quote so I looked up Emma Goldman. I found out that she
(Side note: I always find it funny that anarchists are the kind of people that would never survive in the kind of world they strive for.)
This past week I was reading an article in Vanity Fair about the 1981 movie Reds. It a movie co-written, directed and starring Warren Beatty. It is the story of an American journalist in Russia during the Communist Revolution. This movie is based on a true story and Emma Goldman is one of the characters portrayed. Weird, I had never heard about her before in my life and I read about her twice in one week.
On to the next connection:
In said article, the writer states that no one could ever call Warren Beatty a political dilettante since he has been an active member of the Democrat party since the 60s. I was amused since I love the word dilettante and it is not common (at least in the circles I travel in). Low and behold, guess what Dictionary.com's word of the day is?
dilettante \DIL-uh-tont; dil-uh-TONT; dil-uh-TON-tee; -TANT; -TAN-tee\, noun:
1. An amateur or dabbler; especially, one who follows an art or a branch of knowledge sporadically, superficially, or for amusement only.
2. An admirer or lover of the fine arts.
adjective:
1. Of or characteristic of a dilettante; amateurish.
So to sum things up:
Dance quote -> Emma Goldman -> Reds -> Warren Beatty
Word of the Day -> dilettante -> not Warren Beatty
Some day I may have to post my theory about why some men don't marry until alter in life. I call it my "Warren Beatty Theory".
"If I can't dance, I don't want your revolution!" - Emma Goldman (there are many variations of this quote floating around)
I thought this was an interesting quote so I looked up Emma Goldman. I found out that she
was a Lithuanian-born anarcho-communist known for her anarchist writings and speeches. Adopted by First-wave feminists, she has been lionized as an iconic 'rebel woman' feminist. Goldman played a pivotal role in the development of anarchism in the US and Europe throughout the first half of the twentieth century.
